Welburn Gourd Farm

Welburn Gourd Farm, located in Fallbrook, California, has been a loyal supplier of ipu--gourds--to the hula community and to the Hawaiʻi community, shipping ipu all around the world.

We are excited for this opportunity to kākoʻo the folks at Welburn by gathering for this Kīpaepae and lending our spirits, energy, movement, and voices to the intention of procreation, growth, and restoration of an abundant crop.

What is a Kīpaepae?

A directed and focused energy that builds paepae, sustained support. The sequence of oli, hei, and hula is an external amplification of the internal desire for connection. As kanaka we desire to connect with this ʻāina and physically manifest--through our dance and our voices--the spiritual desire to nurture this ʻāina nui o nā ipu.

This course will allow you to learn the oli and hula that will be part of the Kīpaepae ceremony through LIVE zoom practice sessions. The following will be provided:

  • PDF files of each mele
  • Audio files of each mele
  • Video recording of each LIVE practice session
  • Student question/comment feature

Hālau o Kanahele

Hanu i loko--breath in...hoʻokuʻu--release the breath. We are the long breath of the forest, using the traditional ecological knowledge and practices of our ancestors to promote environmental kinship. ʻIke kupuna (ancestral wisdom) guides us to think, behave, and act in a way that focuses on a healthy honua (earth) and a healthy kanaka (human).
